Alex Krem

(1909-1988)

Camping Unlimited is a non-profit organization which was founded with the help of parents, teachers and friends of the developmentally disabled by Alex Krem. Mr Krem was a special education teacher who did ground breaking work in successfully main-streaming exceptional children into a regular public school environment.

Alex Krem was an extraordinary man who entered the field of special education later in life, after doing pioneering work in group dynamics and also serving as a chemist testing the first polio vaccine.

After he developed an interest in the disabled and entered the teaching profession, he became aware of the need for recreational pursuits for the specially challenged that could lead to personal growth. In the beginning, developmentally disabled students went on vacatons with the Krem family. Some of the first camp outs were on school grounds and in the Krem's backyard. Alex's wife Elsie and his two sons, Alex Jr. and Tom, were the first counselors.

In 1961 the organization known as Camping Unlimited became a tax-exempt corporation and in 1965, forty-five acres were purchased in the Santa Curz Mountains near Boulder Creek as a camp site. In the beginning, the camp was simply platforms with tents. Over the years with the help of volunteers and donations "Camp Krem" has been steadily improved with buildings, a paved road, hiking trails, and a large swimming pool specially adapted for use by the disabled. See the facilities section of the web site for a closer look.
