Camping Unlimited, since its founding, has worked under a unique philosophy based on developing a sense of ownership, and self reliance, both on the part of the campers and the staff. The Camping Unlimited program provides a rare opportunity for normal and exceptional persons to learn from one another. By helping the disabled to help themselves, counselors have been able to acquire insights and understandings that are both gratifying and inspiring. Many counselors have gone on to enter professions serving the needs of those with special challenges.

Although many of the summer camp staff and administrative personnel are paid, the organization has relied heavily on volunteers, both to build and maintain facilities, and to serve as counselors and staff. Young adult counselors have always been an important part of the Camping Unlimited philosophy and young people have often served in roles of leadership and have been given genuine opportunities for decision-making.
