Camping Unlimited Volunteers
Since our inception, volunteers have helped make everything happen. Most used to come from local high schools, but with new requirements for public service and expansion in our programs, they are now also recruited from local colleges. We also advertise on social media with volunteer organizations in the Bay Area to attract adults who are interested in a varied and rewarding volunteer experience. All who are 18 or older are encouraged to apply to be summer camp counselors.
One of the benefits of volunteering is participation in a variety of activities such as hiking in state parks, attending sporting events or going to amusement parks. There are also cultural programs to attend and theatrical productions to see, as well as many other interesting experiences on the road. Of course there is camping at our Camp Krem facility and exploring the beautiful area of the surrounding Santa Cruz Mountains. Also offered are extended travel camps to places such as Lake Tahoe, Yosemite, Washington or Disneyland. We do our best to reward and encourage our volunteers by striving to provide plenty of experiences they will enjoy. When accepted, volunteers are put on a special mailing list to receive our quarterly newsletter with a schedule of upcoming trips and other activities. They must sign up 1 to 2 weeks in advance for any activities or trips they choose.
Volunteer counseling can be a wonderful learning and life experience with great rewards, but caring for children and adults with disabilities like Down Syndrome, Cerebral Palsy, Autism, physical or emotional problems is challenging work that requires leadership, patience, a sense of humor and good judgment. Volunteers monitor the safety and care of campers. Under supervision, they also help with the camper’s personal care that may include dressing, feeding or toileting. Counselors learn new job skills and have a wonderful time discovering new recreational activities and exploring the great outdoors. Volunteers are transported to all events via Camping Unlimited vehicles and can be picked up/returned from Emeryville, Santa Cruz or San Jose.
